Neither Curt nor I sleep very well most nights. Our minds are constantly going and it is difficulty to shut down. Could it be due to the fact we are getting older? Could it be due to the stresses that we allow in our lives? That answer is difficult to delineate. Last night, the night of February 26, 2024 my husband did his usual thing and got out of bed in the middle of the night. This time, I could hear him moaning with every movement and step he made. I, through a twilight sleep, thought to myself "snap, crackle and pop" when I heard his bones creaking from rising. This did kind of make me question what was going on with him, but I decided to roll over and go back to sleep instead. When we awoke startled at 6:30 am, he was back in bed with me and we now had to hit the ground running because we were late!
He talked that morning about how he was hurting, but it was not a "flu type hurting." He said it was from the hard work he had done on the farm the day before. This is not a surprise to me as I know he works very hard every day.
So, who in their right mind in their 50s would decide to leave a secure government job with fantastic benefits and try to make a living doing physical, manual labor? That would be my husband, Curt McGruder. You see, the thing that does make him very happy in life is actually working. It's not just the physical aspect of work, though he does love that. It is seeing the "fruits of his labor" that makes him happy. Seeing things grow from seed to bloom and then to a product we can market is what truly gives him joy.
With that said, I do admit, it is a little concerning, knowing that the aches and pains in our bones will not improve over the next 20 years. That will certainly not stop him.
You see, yesterday was his birthday. He told me this morning that he had planned on making a happy birthday post to thank everyone for their well-wishes. When he told me he had been thinking about what to say, I knew this was going to be good as he doens't make posts lightly. He always ponders what he wants to say, and his humor does shine through. This is what he told me this morning: "I turned 53 years old today. My life has not changed much in the last 50 years. I got to play in the dirt. I got to play with my tractors. I got to eat pizza and ice cream cake." What more could a man ask for?
